Fall Health Guide for South Florida Seniors (2026)
October through December brings flu season, Medicare open enrollment, and the tail end of hurricane season. Here is how South Florida seniors can prepare — and the medical supplies that matter most this time of year.
Fall in South Florida doesn't look like fall anywhere else. There's no leaf color change, and temperatures stay warm well into November. But October through December is still a critical season for seniors and their caregivers — flu season ramps up, Medicare open enrollment opens, and the Atlantic hurricane season doesn't officially end until November 30.
Here's a practical guide to staying healthy, prepared, and covered this fall.
1. Medicare Open Enrollment: October 15 – December 7
Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 through December 7 every year. This is your window to:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan (or vice versa)
- Change your Medicare Advantage plan
- Add, drop, or change a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
Changes made during AEP take effect January 1, 2027.
Why this matters for DME: If you're switching plans, check whether your new plan covers the durable medical equipment you use — wheelchairs, CPAP machines, nebulizers, and compression garments for lymphedema are commonly covered under Part B, but coverage details vary by plan.
If you have questions about what your Medicare plan covers for home medical equipment, call us at (305) 529-9976. We've been helping Miami-Dade families navigate Medicare DME coverage since 1988.
2. Flu Season Preparation
Florida's flu season typically peaks between December and February, but cases begin rising in October. For seniors — especially those with COPD, asthma, heart disease, or diabetes — the flu can quickly become serious.
Steps to take now:
- Get your flu shot — available at most pharmacies and your primary care physician's office
- Stock up on respiratory supplies — if you use a nebulizer, make sure you have fresh tubing, masks, and medication on hand. Browse our respiratory equipment section.
- Have a thermometer and pulse oximeter at home — these are essential for monitoring symptoms at home
- Review your emergency contacts — make sure your caregiver, family members, and physician's after-hours line are saved in your phone
3. Hurricane Season Recovery Supplies
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. While the peak is typically August and September, late-season storms can still affect South Florida through November.
If a storm has recently affected your area, or if you want to be prepared for the remainder of the season, stock these essential medical supplies:
- Wound care supplies — gauze, wound dressings, antiseptic solution, and bandages for minor injuries. See our wound care and first aid sections.
- Extra incontinence supplies — power outages and displacement can make access to supplies difficult. Having a 2–4 week supply on hand is smart planning. Browse incontinence supplies.
- Backup medications — ask your physician for a 30-day emergency supply of critical medications
- Mobility equipment — if evacuation is a possibility, make sure your wheelchair, walker, or rollator is in good working order. See our mobility equipment section.
4. Fall Prevention: A Year-Round Priority
Falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and older, and the risk increases in the fall and winter months — even in Florida, where wet floors from afternoon rain showers are a common hazard.
Home modifications that reduce fall risk:
- Install grab bars in the shower and near the toilet — our bathroom safety section has a full selection
- Use a shower chair or bath bench to eliminate the risk of slipping while standing
- Add a raised toilet seat to reduce strain on hips and knees after surgery
- Ensure adequate lighting in hallways and bathrooms
- Remove loose rugs and clutter from walking paths
Mobility aids that improve stability:
- A rollator (wheeled walker) provides more stability than a standard walker and includes a seat for resting
- A quad cane offers more support than a standard cane for those with balance issues
- A transport wheelchair is useful for longer outings when walking fatigue is a concern
Browse our full mobility equipment selection or call us to speak with a team member about the right option for your situation.
5. Compression Garments and Cooler Weather
Fall is actually the best time of year to wear compression stockings in South Florida — cooler temperatures make them more comfortable, and the reduced humidity helps with compliance.
If you've been prescribed compression garments for DVT prevention, post-surgical recovery, or lymphedema management, fall is a good time to:
- Replace worn garments (most should be replaced every 3–6 months)
- Get properly measured for a new pair — sizing can change with weight fluctuations
- Stock up before the holiday season when shipping times may be longer
Browse our compression garments section or call us for sizing guidance.
6. Caregiver Checklist for Fall
If you're caring for an elderly parent or family member in Miami-Dade County, use this fall checklist:
- Confirm Medicare plan coverage and review AEP options (deadline: December 7)
- Schedule flu shot appointment
- Restock incontinence supplies for a 4-week supply
- Check wound care supply inventory
- Inspect mobility equipment for wear (wheelchair tires, walker tips, rollator brakes)
- Install or check bathroom grab bars and shower chair
- Confirm emergency contact list is current
- Review hurricane supply kit for medical items
